A common comment is that the taste of raw mushrooms and truffles isn't appealing to everyone. Many find the earthy, chewy flavor similar to eating dirt or spoiled popcorn. But don't let that stop you from having a magical trip! There are numerous ways to mask the taste and make the experience more pleasant. Moreover, processing mushrooms can also help reduce the nausea some experience when eating them raw.
Important tip : The psychoactive substance psilocybin breaks down at high temperatures . Therefore, always add mushrooms after a dish has cooled and do not cook them.
Here are some creative ways to use your homegrown mushrooms:
Tips for Preparing Magic Mushrooms
1. Mushroom or Truffle Tea
Brewing tea is a popular and simple way to consume magic mushrooms or truffles. Psilocybin dissolves well in water, even cold water, but warm water makes it more palatable. The tea can provide a faster and sharper peak of the trip because the psilocybin is absorbed more quickly by the body (within 20-30 minutes), and can reduce physical symptoms such as stomach pain .
Ingredients : Dried mushrooms or truffles, kettle or teapot, coffee filters or empty tea bags (fine-mesh sieve), optional: flavourings such as honey, ginger , lemon or mint.
Preparation :
Grind the mushrooms or truffles as finely as possible . Dried mushrooms are best ground with a metal weed grinder , while fresh truffles can be finely chopped or crushed with a knife.
Bring water to the boil (about 250ml per portion) and let it cool to 70-75°C , or wait 5-10 minutes after it has come off the boil.
Place the ground powder in a tea bag or coffee filter and add it to the hot water.
Let it steep for 15-30 minutes (fresh mushrooms 10-15 minutes longer).
Strain the mixture to remove any residue, this will help prevent nausea.
Add honey, sugar, ginger, or mint to taste for a better flavor. Avoid caffeine (such as black or green tea), as it can make the trip restless and chaotic.
Lemon Tek (Lemon Magic Truffle Tea) : This is a popular method for a faster and more intense trip . The citric acid helps convert psilocybin into psilocin, which normally happens in the stomach. Grind the mushrooms/truffles into a powder , add fresh lemon or lime juice until everything is submerged, and let it steep for 30-60 minutes. This tea has a very limited shelf life and is best consumed immediately after preparation. Note : Avoid lemon with mushrooms, as they are more unstable than truffles.
Storage : The tea can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, preferably in a sealed container.
2. Magic Mushroom Chocolate
Chocolate is a classic and delicious way to completely mask the taste of magic mushrooms. The Aztecs used cacao combined with honey and shrooms for a delicious, psychedelic treat.
What you need : Dried mushrooms or truffles, dark chocolate , saucepan, glass bowl, sharp knife or coffee grinder, chocolate molds or a baking tray.
Preparation :
Make sure your mushrooms or truffles are completely dried .
Chop the shrooms into small pieces or grind them into a fine powder with a coffee grinder for an even dosage.
Break the chocolate into pieces and melt it in a bain-marie (in a glass bowl over a saucepan of simmering water).
Remove the melted chocolate from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes before adding the mushrooms to prevent the psilocybin from breaking down.
Stir the chopped/ground mushrooms evenly through the melted chocolate.
Pour the mixture into chocolate molds or onto a baking sheet and let it cool in the refrigerator.
For longer storage, wrap the chocolates in foil and store them in a cool, dark place.
3. Truffle pesto
Pesto is ideal because of its strong, spicy flavor that can overpower the earthy taste of mushrooms . This recipe is prepared without heating, which maximizes the preservation of the psilocybin.
Ingredients : Fresh or dried truffles/mushrooms, blender, fresh herbs (basil, parsley, cilantro, oregano), Parmesan cheese (or nutritional yeast for vegan), finely chopped walnuts or pine nuts, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper.
Directions : Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until coarsely ground. Ideal as a dip with toasted pita bread, carrots, or pasta.
4. Magic Mushroom Salad
A nutritious and healthy option that masks the mushroom taste.
Ingredients : Fresh mushrooms or truffles, mixed green leafy vegetables (such as spinach), goat cheese, pine nuts or walnuts, sesame oil, apple cider vinegar, mustard, pepper to taste.
Directions : Place the greens in a bowl. Toast the pine nuts. Combine the sesame oil, apple cider vinegar, and mustard for the dressing and drizzle over the salad. Crumble the goat cheese and season with pepper. Chop the mushrooms/truffles and stir them into the salad. Add them once the salad has cooled slightly, if other warm ingredients were used.
5. Mushroom capsules
For those who really can't stand the taste or don't want to cook at all, mushrooms can be put into capsules.
What you need : Very dry mushrooms or truffles, coffee grinder, capsule machine , gelatin or vegetarian capsules (size "00" holds approximately 750mg of powder).
Preparation : Grind the dried mushrooms into a very fine powder using a coffee grinder. Follow the capsule filling machine's instructions.
Dosage : Use a digital scale for accurate dosing in each capsule.
Tip : Pierce small holes in the capsules before use to speed up the onset of effect, as the capsules must first dissolve in the stomach.
6. Blue Honey
This is a sweet and appealing way to store and consume magic mushrooms. Honey is an effective preservative, keeping the mushrooms fresh indefinitely. No cooking or heating is required when making blue honey, which protects the psilocybin.
Why does it turn blue?: Mushrooms turn honey blue because they themselves turn blue when psilocybin oxidizes. This process is caused by a cascade reaction involving about six different molecules. While blue looks cool, more blue often means more oxidation, which can slightly reduce potency. Avoid bruising.
What you'll need : Dried mushrooms (or truffles), liquid honey, an airtight glass jar, sharp knife or coffee grinder.
Preparation :
Dry the mushrooms or truffles completely ('crisply dry') to prevent fermentation and decomposition.
Chop or grind the dried mushrooms as finely as possible (preferably to a powder) to maximize the extraction of psilocybin into the honey.
Fill the jar with alternating layers of mushroom powder and honey, or mix the honey and powder in a bowl first and then pour it into the jar for a more even distribution.
Seal the jar airtight and store in a cool, dark place for 1-4 months . The longer the mixture sits, the more potent it becomes.
Dosage : Start with a small dose, such as a teaspoon, as the potency is unknown until you have tested it carefully.
Storage : Store blue honey in a cool, dry place, just like regular honey. Provided it's properly dried, it will keep indefinitely.
Vegan alternative : Agave can be used in place of honey, using the same steps.
Important Considerations for a Safe Trip
Regardless of the preparation method, good preparation is essential for a positive experience.
Dosage : The potency of magic mushrooms varies by species and from person to person. The effect of psilocybin depends on the dosage, body weight, mental state, and experience. There is no safe dosage . Always start with a low dose and it's better to take too little than too much. A general guideline for dried Psilocybe cubensis is:
Microdosage : 0.1 – 0.3 grams.
Mild trip : 1 – 1.5 grams.
Average trip : 1.5 – 2.5 grams.
Intense trip : From 2.5 – 3 grams.
For fresh mushrooms, the dosage is higher: light trip 5-10 grams, average 15-20 grams, heavy more than 20 grams.
"Set & Setting" : This refers to your mental state (set) and the environment (setting). Ensure you have a safe, calm, and familiar environment and take mushrooms with people you feel comfortable with. Only use if you feel well and are not ill, in a bad mood, or experiencing any mental health issues.
Trip Sitter & Trip Stopper : Especially if you're inexperienced, it's wise to have a sober, supportive trip sitter nearby who can calm you down or guide you if the trip becomes uncomfortable. It's also a good idea to have a trip stopper on hand; this can lessen the effects of a strong trip.
No Combinations : Combining magic mushrooms/truffles with alcohol or other drugs (such as hash or weed) is strongly discouraged , as this can intensify the effects and increase the chance of a 'bad trip'.
Empty Stomach : It's often recommended to take mushrooms on an empty stomach for a stronger effect. However, this can sometimes cause nausea. Eating something light two hours before taking them can prevent nausea.
We hope these tips help you fully enjoy your homegrown magic mushrooms! Remember that mindful preparation and responsible use are key to a valuable and safe psychedelic experience. Do you have any tips or recipes of your own? Share them in the comments!
