In a few weeks it will be spring break. Good enough of a reason to pack your suitcase for a short city trip. What about these cities?
It’s only a few more weeks until spring break. Enough reason to pack your suitcase and enjoy a short holiday. Since it’s not very long, we have selected some nice cities for a city trip.
City trip to Lisbon
Are you searching for sun during the spring break? Book a city trip to Lisbon. In Portugal it isn’t nearly as cold as in the Netherlands during February and March: with a bit of luck the temperature will be around 16 degrees. Warm enough to walk around without a thick winter coat. You can fly to the Portuguese capital from Eindhoven within three hours. Visit the Torre de Belém at the Santa Maria de Belém district and pay a visit to the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos monastery too when you are there. Both are on the World Heritage List. In the city center you will find the Rossio square: the main square of the city. To eat and go out, head to the Bairro Alto neighborhood. You can reach this area with an elevator (Elevador de Santa Justa) from the city center. The old district Alfama, known for its steep streets, stairs and alleys, are a must-see when you are in Lisbon. Do you want to visit the new center? Then go to Parque das Nações, with an aquarium, cable car and the Torre (tower) Vasco da Gama (who is buried in the aforementioned monastery).
City trip to Istanbul
In Istanbul you can count on nice sunny weather in February as well. This special city is divided into three parts by the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. As a result, parts of the largest city in Turkey lie in both Europe and Asia. The Bosphorus Bridge connects the Asian part (Beylerbeyi) with the European part (Ortaköy). Unfortunately you can not walk across it, but that is possible on the Galata bridge that also runs over the Bosphorus. The most famous landmark of Istanbul is the Sultan Ahmet mosque, which you probably know better than the Blue Mosque. Pay a visit the Süleymaniye mosque too: it’s the largest in the city. The old walls of Constantinople are still standing and are also worth a visit. If you are fond of herbs and spices, go to the Spice Bazaar in the Eminönü district. The flight from Amsterdam to Istanbul takes about 3.5 hours.
Winterberg city trip
Would you rather immerse yourself in snowy atmospheres? Then choose Winterberg for your city trip. This village in Germany lies between the hills of the Hochsauerland. Winterberg lies at a distance of about 330 kilometers from Utrecht and can be reached in 3.5 hours by car. The ski area is located at an altitude of 800 meters and has thirty slopes that are open between December and March. There is also a bobsleigh track and a ski-jump. So if you were completely mesmerized by the Winter Olympics, you can show your own tricks at Winterberg. You can’t go skiing without après-ski: there are plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs. There are also extensive children's menus for the kids, so you can go out with the whole family.
