From July 1st, supermarkets will no longer be allowed to display cigarettes and rolling tobacco in plain sight.

The so-called display ban was initially scheduled to take effect on January 1st, but supermarkets were granted an extension by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport until July 1st because they needed more time. Most major supermarket chains have now completed the adjustments required to comply with the ban, which takes effect on July 1st.

Fines from 450 to 4,500 euros

The ban on displaying tobacco products in supermarkets is part of a broader package of measures to discourage smoking. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) will begin enforcement immediately starting July 1st. The fine for violating the ban ranges from €450 to €4,500.
