Spore prints

Mushroom spores can be thought of as "seeds", with each spore containing exactly half the genetic information needed to produce a true mushroom.

Mushroom spores can be thought of as "seeds", with each spore containing exactly half the genetic information needed to produce a true mushroom.

The spores are released into the environment from the gills (or pores) located under the cap of an adult mushroom. They are then swept away by air currents and if they land in the right spot they will eventually produce fine white mycelial strands.

The mycelium grows into a new mushroom, after which the cycle starts all over again.

Spores come in all different shapes, colors and sizes depending on the species - they are truly amazing! And to think that a single mushroom can spread billions of spores into the air.
