Frequently asked questions about growkits

I have a complaint about my growkit. What should I do?

Are you not satisfied with your growkit? Please contact Novus Fumus customer service. They will be happy to help you with any questions or problems. The instructions are intended to guide you as clearly as possible when using your growkit.

What are the best conditions for a growkit?

In nature, mushrooms grow best in warm and humid conditions with enough fresh air. For the best results:

  • Do not place the growkit in direct sunlight.
  • Maintain a constant temperature between 20–24 °C.
  • Make sure condensation remains present inside the grow bag (lightly mist daily if needed).
  • Open the bag several times a day for fresh air, but do not breathe into the bag.
Is a heating mat necessary?

A heating mat can provide extra warmth, but it can also make the temperature too high. The best results are usually achieved at a room temperature of 20–24 °C. If you do use a heating mat, never place the growkit directly on it. Always use a buffer such as a thick towel.

My growkit has not produced mushrooms after 3–4 weeks. Is that normal?

Most growkits produce mushrooms within 3–4 weeks, but sometimes it takes a little longer. Just as in nature, some mushrooms develop faster than others. Check whether the temperature, humidity, and fresh air conditions are correct before assuming something is wrong.

My growkit has green, grey, or black spots. What does that mean?

Green, grey, or black discoloration usually indicates mold contamination. In that case, unfortunately, the growkit can no longer be used.

Common causes include:

  • Touching the growkit without properly washing your hands and arms.
  • Working in an unclean environment.
  • Breathing directly into the grow bag.
  • Using dirty water for misting.
Why has my growkit turned red/brown and started to smell sour?

A red or brown discoloration combined with a sour smell usually indicates bacterial contamination. Unfortunately, in that case the growkit can no longer be used.

This is usually caused by:

  • Insufficient hygiene during handling.
  • An unclean growing environment.
  • Breathing into the grow bag.
  • Using contaminated water.
Why is my growkit turning blue?

A blue discoloration can occur when the mycelium or the mushrooms become damaged or stressed. This can happen, for example, through touching or through fluctuations in humidity (too much or too little water). This is a common occurrence and is normal.
