Welcome to our collection of mescaline cacti. For the botanical collector and lover of rare cacti, we offer various iconic species, from the slow-growing Peyote to the imposing San Pedro.

What are mescaline cacti?

Mescaline cacti are special plants that naturally contain the alkaloid mescaline. Species such as the Peyote and San Pedro originally grow in the deserts of Mexico and the Andes Mountains. Collectors appreciate these cacti for their unique shapes and historical value. Whether you choose a spherical Lophophora or a columnar Trichocereus, you are bringing a special piece of natural history into your home.

Mescaline: Historical and Cultural

Mescaline-containing cacti have played a role in South American tradition for thousands of years, especially among indigenous peoples in Mexico and the Andes Mountains. In some rituals and spiritual practices, these cacti are used as a means to expand perception and seek a sense of connection with nature and the spiritual.

What does mescaline do?

Mescaline is a naturally occurring alkaloid with hallucinogenic properties. It alters the perception of sight, sound, and touch. As a result, colors may appear more intense and patterns or geometric figures may become visible. Objects may appear larger or smaller than they actually are. The effects usually last 4 to 6 hours, after which the user is sober again within 8 to 12 hours. You can read more about Mescaline in this blog: The fascinating world of Mescaline

Popular varieties: Peyote and San Pedro

In our shop you will find the most important varieties for your collection:

Peyote cactus (Lophophora williamsii)

A legendary, slow-growing cactus from Mexico. This cactus has no spines, is spherical, and produces beautiful pink flowers after years. A crown jewel for the collector.

San Pedro & Peruviana (Trichocereus)

The San Pedro and Peruviana are strong columnar cacti from South America. They grow relatively quickly and, thanks to their robust appearance, are an impressive addition to your interior or greenhouse.

Risks of Mescaline cacti?

Just like other hallucinogenic drugs, the use of mescaline carries risks, especially at a high dose or in an unstable state of mind. In an unsafe environment, a trip can become frightening (a 'bad trip'). This can lead to anxiety, confusion, or a temporary loss of touch with reality. This is especially risky for people with a predisposition to psychosis, depression, or anxiety disorders.

Caring for your cactus

Growing from seeds or cuttings is simple with these basic rules:

  • Light: Plenty of light is essential. A sunny spot is ideal, but gradually acclimate young plants to direct sunlight.
  • Water: Only water when the soil is completely dry. In winter, they need virtually no water.
  • Soil: Use an airy mixture of cactus potting soil with extra sand or perlite for good drainage.

Why order from Novus Fumus?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Are mescaline cacti legal in the Netherlands?
Yes, as living plants, they are legal to own as collector's items. Processing for the extraction of mescaline is prohibited.

What is the difference between Peyote and San Pedro?
Peyote is spherical and grows very slowly. San Pedro is a columnar cactus that grows taller more quickly.

Is mescaline addictive?
According to Jellinek, mescaline is not addictive. However, a transient tolerance develops: the body temporarily gets used to the effects. This means that shortly after use, one would need more for the same experience. This tolerance usually disappears after a week or two of non-use.
