    Size chart

The Cactus Pachanoi, better known as the San Pedro cactus, is a real stunner. This specific cutting is about 25 centimeters long. Since it’s a living product, the exact size can vary a bit in practice, usually landing between 25 and 29 centimeters. The San Pedro is famous for its powerful history and the fact that it naturally contains mescaline.

What is the San Pedro cactus?

The San Pedro cactus (Echinopsis pachanoi) is a sturdy, column-shaped cactus that originally comes from the Andes Mountains in South America. It grows naturally at high altitudes in countries like Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Chile. From a botanical standpoint, this species is known for growing relatively fast. That’s a huge difference compared to other mescaline-containing cacti, like the Peyote, which can take twice as long to reach maturity.

The cactus features beautiful ribbed stems in light to dark green, which can take on a bluish glow as they get older. In the summer months, a mature plant can produce large, fragrant white flowers that only open at night. The plant naturally contains the organic, psychoactive alkaloid mescaline. Because of this, it has played a central role in shamanic and religious rituals within indigenous cultures for thousands of years.

What’s the best way to use the San Pedro cactus?

In traditional ceremonies, consuming San Pedro involves careful and respectful preparation. Users often process the cactus into a brew, like tea, or eat the plant in dried or fresh slices. The taste is intense, but it’s generally considered less bitter than Peyote, which means physical reactions like nausea don’t kick in quite as fast. To ensure a smooth start, it’s almost always consumed on an empty stomach.

If you're planning to store the cutting, it’s important not to leave it in bright, direct sunlight when it arrives. When you're ready to start the experience, always make sure you're in a safe, familiar environment. Having a sober guide—a tripsitter—is essential to help keep things calm and grounded.

What is the San Pedro experience like?

Historical and spiritual accounts describe the San Pedro experience as a harmonious, eye-opening journey. While some traditional substances force an intense look inward, Huachuma (the indigenous name for San Pedro) actually turns your gaze outward. You’ll usually start feeling the first effects 1 to 2 hours after taking it, and the whole experience lasts between 8 and 15 hours on average. Participants often talk about a major sharpening of the senses—colors and textures suddenly pop much more. You might become more sensitive to light, making everything look like it’s glowing with a soft radiance. Emotions can also feel way more intense, making it easy to feel a deep sense of connection and empathy for everything around you.

How do you grow and propagate San Pedro Pachanoi cuttings?

If you love taking care of plants, the Pachanoi is a great addition to your collection. It’s a super tough plant that can handle a bit of a rough time. Want to replant this 25–29 cm cutting and let it root itself? Just follow this simple step-by-step guide:

    1. Wound care: Was the cactus recently cut? If so, gently dab the cut end with a clean piece of paper towel to soak up any excess moisture.
    2. Drying: Place the cutting in a warm, dry spot with indirect light (max 25°C). Whatever you do, keep it out of direct sun! Let the cutting sit for at least a week so a healthy, dry callus forms over the wound. Check the wound carefully—if you see any weird spots or dots, it might be an infection. If that happens, use a disinfected knife to slice off a tiny 0.5 cm sliver and let it dry all over again.
    3. Planting: Pick a pot with drainage holes at the bottom. Fill it with a mix of sand and potting soil (or a special cactus mix) to make sure water drains well. Place the dried cutting in the middle of the pot, about 3 centimeters deep. Put the pot in a warm spot away from direct sunlight.
    4. Water and aftercare: Wait until the plant is fully rooted, which usually takes 3 to 6 weeks. Don't give it any water during this time. Only once the roots have formed should you give it its first little sips of water. Always let the soil dry out completely between waterings—it’s even okay if it wilts slightly—as this drastically lowers the chance of mold and root rot. During the active growing season in the summer, you can gradually give it more water and light.

Would you rather grow your own San Pedro from scratch?

While this 25 cm cutting is ready for care or ritual use right away, many enthusiasts find it fascinating to watch the process from the very beginning. Want to grow your own mescaline cacti from the very first seed? The San Pedro Grow Kit makes it easy to start your own project. This kit has everything you need to give the seeds a healthy start, so you can watch your plant grow step by step.
