    Size chart

The San Pedro Cutting Peruvianus, better known as the Peruvian Torch, is an impressive piece of nature for anyone into authentic ethnobotanical rituals. This powerful cutting is about 25 centimeters long. Since it’s a living product, the actual size usually falls between 25 and 29 centimeters. This specific species is known as one of the biggest and strongest mescaline cacti in the San Pedro family. Heads up when it arrives: the Peruvian Torch has thick, strong green to blue-green spines, so always handle it with care.

What is the San Pedro Peruvian Torch cactus?

The Peruvian Torch (Echinopsis peruviana, formerly known as Trichocereus peruvianus) is a fast-growing, columnar cactus. Originally, this plant was found in the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains, spread across countries like Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Chile. In these regions, the plant has a rich history. Shamans have used the cactus for thousands of years for religious and spiritual purposes. Botanically, the cactus stands out for its robust size and striking blue-green hue. What makes this species truly unique is the natural presence of the psychoactive alkaloid mescaline. Under the right conditions, this variant grows into one of the most powerful-looking plants of its kind.

How do you prepare and consume the San Pedro Peruvian Torch cactus?

In traditional rituals, preparing this cactus requires a careful touch, partly because of the spines. Users usually slice the cactus into rounds, which can be enjoyed fresh or dried. Another popular method is brewing a concentrated tea from the flesh of the plant. It's almost always consumed on an empty stomach to help the active ingredients work their best. A big advantage over the Peyote cactus is the taste. The Peruvian Torch is much less bitter and gross, which means there’s a much lower chance of feeling nauseous, making for a smoother start to the ritual.

What’s the experience like with the San Pedro Peruvian Torch cactus?

The experience with the Peruvian Torch is described as an enlightening and harmonious journey that shifts your focus outward. While other traditional remedies like Ayahuasca force a confronting journey inward to heal the soul, this cactus actually connects you with your surroundings. You learn from the universe and feel a deep harmony with the world around you. It helps you get back to your core and move past personal blocks.

The first effects usually kick in 1 to 2 hours after consumption and last for about 8 to 15 hours in total. A classic effect is the extreme sharpening of the senses. You’ll hear, feel, and notice details that usually pass you by. There’s often a unique sensitivity to light, where rays of light seem almost tangible and objects take on a soft, heavenly glow. Emotions are also heavily boosted. Feelings of intense love, joy, and deep peace flow easily. Compared to Peyote, this experience is often calmer, easier on the body, and less overwhelming.

How can you take cuttings and grow the Peruvian Torch?

For plant lovers, the Peruvian Torch is a great addition to the collection. It’s a very tough plant that can handle a bit of a rough time. Want to replant this 25–29 cm cutting and let it root yourself? Just follow this simple step-by-step guide:

    1. Wound care: Was the cactus recently cut? Use a clean piece of paper towel to gently dab the cut end of the cutting to soak up any excess moisture.
    2. Drying: Place the cutting in a warm, dry spot with indirect light (max 25 °C). Absolutely do not put the cactus in direct sunlight! Let the cutting sit for at least a week so a healthy, dry callus forms over the wound. Check the wound carefully: if you see any strange spots, there might be an infection. If so, use a disinfected knife to slice off a tiny 0.5 cm sliver and let it dry again.
    3. Planting: Pick a pot with drainage holes at the bottom. Fill it with a mix of sand and potting soil (or a special cactus mix) to ensure great drainage. Place the dried cutting in the center of the pot, about 3 centimeters deep. Set the pot in a warm spot out of direct sunlight.
    4. Water and aftercare: Wait until the plant is fully rooted; this usually takes 3 to 6 weeks. Do not give it any water during this time. Only once roots have formed should you give it its first tiny bits of water. Always let the soil dry out completely between waterings—it’s even okay if it wilts slightly—as this drastically reduces the chance of mold and root rot. During the active growing season in summer, you can gradually give it more water and light.

Would you rather grow the Peruvian Torch from scratch?

While this 25 cm cutting is ready for immediate use or care, growing these plants yourself is a super rewarding hobby. Cacti are hardy plants that are easy to maintain if you have a bit of patience. Want to experience the fascinating growing process from the very beginning and raise your own mescaline cacti from seed? With the Peruvian Torch Grow Kit, you can easily start your own botanical project. The kit provides the perfect base for seeds to germinate in a warm, airy environment, letting you watch your cacti grow into powerful specimens step by step.
