Which grinder is right for you?
When choosing a grinder, pay particular attention to the number of pieces, the diameter and the material. These features determine how much grinding space you have, where the ground cannabis ends up and how the grinder feels to use.
The teeth, grip and closure can also vary from one model to another. Below, we explain the main differences.
2-piece, 3-piece or 4-piece grinder?
The number of pieces mainly determines what happens to the cannabis after grinding.
2-piece grinder
With a 2-piece grinder, the cannabis is ground between two sections fitted with teeth or pins. The ground cannabis remains in the same grinding chamber.
Thanks to their simple construction, these grinders are usually compact and easy to carry with you.
3-piece grinder
A 3-piece grinder has a separate collection chamber beneath the grinding chamber. Once the cannabis is fine enough, it falls through the holes into the compartment below.
This means you can take the ground cannabis directly from the collection chamber instead of removing it from between the teeth.
4-piece grinder
A 4-piece grinder has a fine screen for trichomes in addition to the grinding and collection chambers. This is often referred to as a pollen screen. Beneath the screen is an extra compartment where fine particles such as kief can collect.
This type of grinder is particularly useful if you want to collect kief separately from the ground cannabis.
What size grinder do you need?
The diameter determines how much grinding space a grinder offers and how large it feels in your hand.
A small grinder is easy to carry and practical if you usually grind small amounts at a time. A medium-sized grinder provides more grinding space without becoming much bulkier. A large grinder generally gives you more room when you want to break up larger amounts of cannabis at once.
Do not look at the diameter alone. The depth of the grinding chamber and the shape and positioning of the teeth also affect how much material will actually fit inside.
Do not fill the grinder all the way to the edge. The cannabis needs enough space to move between the teeth while you turn it.
Which grinder material should you choose?
The material affects the grinder’s weight, durability, maintenance and how it feels when turning.
Metal grinders
Metal grinders are often sturdier and tend to last longer. They are available in different diameters and as 2-piece, 3-piece and 4-piece models.
Acrylic and plastic grinders
Acrylic and plastic are lightweight and often more affordable than metal. This makes these grinders a practical choice if you are looking for a simple model or want a grinder that is easy to take with you.
Wooden grinders
Wooden grinders stand out mainly because of their natural appearance. Many models use metal pins to break up the cannabis instead of carved teeth.
Hemp fibre grinders
Hemp fibre grinders are made using plant-based hemp fibres. They offer an alternative to grinders made entirely from plastic and are generally lightweight.
Credit card grinder
A credit card grinder is a flat metal card with a fine grating surface that can be used to break up cannabis. Its slim size makes it easy to carry in a wallet, making it especially convenient when you are on the go.
Unlike a regular grinder, a credit card grinder does not have a grinding chamber or collection compartment. You rub the cannabis directly over the grating surface and collect the ground material yourself.
What should you look for in a good grinder?
Two grinders made from the same material and in the same size can still work quite differently. The design of the grinding chamber and the shape and positioning of the teeth make a particularly noticeable difference.
Teeth
Grinders with sharp teeth break up the cannabis as you turn them. Two common designs are diamond-shaped teeth and pointed teeth.
Diamond-shaped teeth have several sharp cutting edges and grip the cannabis from different angles. This usually breaks it up quickly and evenly. Pointed teeth rely mainly on their sharp tips and leave slightly more space between the teeth, allowing larger pieces to move more easily through the grinding chamber.
Holes in the grinding chamber
In 3-piece and 4-piece grinders, there are holes underneath the teeth. Once the cannabis has been ground finely enough, it falls through these holes into the collection chamber.
The size and positioning of these holes help determine when the ground cannabis leaves the grinding chamber.
Grip
Grooves, ridges or a shaped outer edge provide extra grip while turning. This can be especially useful with larger grinders.
Magnetic closure
Many grinders have a magnet in the centre of the lid. This keeps the upper grinding section in place during use.
Pollen screen
In a 4-piece grinder, a fine screen sits beneath the collection chamber. Fine trichomes and small plant particles can pass through into the bottom compartment, while the more coarsely ground cannabis remains above.
How do you use a grinder?
Spread the cannabis around the grinding chamber and place larger pieces between the teeth. Do not overfill the grinder, as the material needs enough space to move while turning.
Put the lid back on and rotate the two halves against each other several times. With a grinder that has a collection chamber, cannabis that is ground finely enough will automatically fall through the holes.
Is the grinder difficult to turn? Do not force it. First check whether the grinding chamber is too full or whether residue is stuck between the teeth or around the edges.
How do you clean a grinder?
Over time, plant residue can build up between the teeth, around the edges and in the threads. Carefully remove loose residue with a small brush or a wooden toothpick.
If your grinder has a pollen screen, handle the fine mesh carefully. Scraping or pressing too hard can damage the screen.
For a more thorough clean, the grinder material matters. Metal, plastic, wood and different coatings are not all suitable for the same cleaning products. Always check the product information before using a cleaning solution.

What is kief?
Kief mainly consists of trichomes that have separated from the cannabis plant. Depending on how fine the screen is, it may also contain a small amount of finely ground plant material. In a 4-piece grinder, the kief is collected in the bottom compartment.
Can you grind hash in a regular grinder?
A regular grinder is primarily designed for dry cannabis. Soft or sticky hash can stick to the teeth and inside of the grinder, making it harder to turn. Always check whether the specific grinder is suitable for the material you want to break up.
What is the difference between a grinder and a crusher?
Grinder and crusher are different names for the same type of tool used to break cannabis into smaller pieces. You may also come across terms such as weed grinder, cannabis grinder and herb grinder.
