Why are fertilizers and nutrients important for cannabis plants?
Cannabis plants need specific nutrients to carry out vital functions throughout their life cycle. These nutrients are divided into macronutrients (needed in larger quantities), secondary macronutrients, and micronutrients (needed in smaller amounts). A deficiency in even one of these elements can result in stunted growth and reduced yields.
Types of Nutrients for Cannabis Plants
The nutrient needs of a cannabis plant vary depending on the growth stage.

Macronutrients (NPK):
- Nitrogen (N): Essential for photosynthesis and the formation of plant proteins. During the vegetative stage, the plant needs more nitrogen than during flowering. A nitrogen deficiency often shows as yellowing of older leaves.
- Phosphorus (P): Crucial for photosynthesis, protein synthesis, and a key component of DNA. Phosphorus and potassium determine the size and density of your buds. A phosphorus deficiency can cause red/purple stems and brown spots on the leaves.
- Potassium (K): Aids in CO₂ regulation and plays a role in photosynthesis and ATP energy production. Potassium deficiency may show as brown or yellow leaf tips, curling leaves, and stretching.

Secondary Macronutrients:
- Calcium (Ca): Important for cell wall development, stress tolerance, nutrient uptake, and enzyme activation. As an immobile nutrient, deficiencies typically appear in new growth.
- Magnesium (Mg): Vital for germination, growth, photosynthesis (at the core of the chlorophyll molecule), energy regulation, and uptake of other nutrients like phosphorus and potassium. Magnesium is mobile, so deficiencies are first seen in older leaves. Calcium and magnesium are often combined in Cal-Mag supplements in a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio to optimize uptake and prevent deficiencies.

Micronutrients: Required in small amounts but equally vital to plant health. Examples include Boron, Zinc, Manganese, Iron, Molybdenum, Chlorine, Copper, and Nickel. Many plant nutrients are enriched with these essential vitamins for cannabis.

Boosters and Stimulators: These products are designed to enhance specific characteristics of cannabis plants. The Importance of pH Value
The acidity level (pH) of the water and growing medium is crucial, as nutrients cannot be properly absorbed if the pH is incorrect.
- For soil grows, a pH between 6.0 and 6.5 is optimal.
- For coco or hydroponic grows, a pH between 5.5 and 6.0 is recommended. You can use pH-regulating products (such as pH minus or pH plus) to adjust the value.
Growing Styles and Matching Nutrients

Identifying and Solving Nutrient Issues
Inspect your plants regularly and carefully to identify issues early on.
- Nutrient deficiency: Symptoms include dry, yellow, or brown leaves and discolored stems. Deficiencies are often resolved by gradually increasing nutrients.
- Overfeeding: Often occurs with synthetic nutrients and shows up as burnt tips, yellow or brown discoloration, and upward-curling leaves. Flush the medium and adjust the pH as needed.
- Nutrient lockout: Happens when roots can no longer absorb nutrients due to overfeeding or incorrect pH. The symptoms mimic deficiencies. Solution: flush and rebalance the pH.
