My Inner Journey: What a Cacao Ceremony Did for Me (and What It Can Do for You!)

I've always been someone who enjoys trying new things, stepping outside my comfort zone and growing. That's how I came across the concept of a "cacao ceremony." To be honest, at first I thought it would be a bit vague, with people banging on pots in a kind of sweat lodge. I had a somewhat humorous image of it. But, as I soon discovered, it had absolutely nothing to do with eating chocolate. These ancient rituals, originating in Central and South America, are meant to connect you with the divine and explore your inner wisdom. I decided to take the plunge, and what a revelation it was! It has given me renewed focus and a huge boost in creativity.

In this guide, I'll take you on my personal journey and share what I've learned so you too can experience the profound benefits of a cacao ceremony.

What exactly is a cacao ceremony?

Let's start at the beginning. A cacao ceremony is a ritual gathering where pure, ceremonial cacao is used as a sacrament. It's an opportunity to come together and consciously drink a special form of cacao. Indigenous cultures from Central and South America, such as the Mayans and Aztecs, have used cacao for spiritual, medicinal, and ceremonial purposes for thousands of years. They saw cacao as a sacred plant with divine properties and even as currency.

The goal is to create a safe, sacred space where you can relax, reflect, and explore your inner wisdom. Cacao is considered a "heart opener," which helps you connect with yourself and others. It has no hallucinogenic effects and is completely legal in the Netherlands.

Important: Ceremonial cacao is very different from the "regular" chocolate you buy in the supermarket. It is raw, 100% pure cacao, without sugar, milk, or other additives. This gives it a much more intense, nutty, and even bitter flavor.

My personal experience with a cacao ceremony

My first ceremony began with setting intentions. I had to think about what I hoped to achieve. This immediately helped me delve deeper into my mind and forget the daily noise for a moment.

Then we drank the cacao. I took small sips, as recommended, and consciously let the warm liquid enter my body. And then the most extraordinary thing happened: an incredible freedom and silence arose in my head. For someone who is constantly "on," this was a strange but very pleasant experience. No noise, no voices, just peace. During the guided meditation with music, I felt a deep connection with myself. Questions I had unconsciously had were answered, and I received a strong confirmation of what I truly wanted. The cacao brought a feeling of love and happiness, as if my heart were opening. I experienced an increase in creativity due to the increased blood flow to my brain. The whole experience felt less "airy-fairy" and more like a profound, sensory journey. After the ceremony, I felt renewed, focused, and more creative. I even created a mood board after the ceremony, which still reminds me daily of my intentions and why I do what I do.

Preparing a cacao ceremony yourself (at home!)

Cacao Ceremony Preparation

Want to experience the power of cacao yourself? You can easily do it at home! Here are the steps and tips I learned that you can follow for a meaningful experience:

1. Preparation

  • Eat light: About two hours before the ceremony, eat a light meal. Important: Avoid coffee or alcohol during this time, as cacao itself is a powerful stimulant and can counteract the effects.
  • Create the right atmosphere: Choose a quiet, comfortable space where you can sit or lie undisturbed. You can cleanse the space with sage or palo santo sticks to feel a deeper connection.
  • Set your intentions: Think about what you hope to achieve with the ceremony. Write them down in a journal or draw intention cards for inspiration.

2. Preparing the Cacao

Preparing the Cacao Ceremony

The cacao you use should be 100% pure, raw ceremonial cacao, straight from the cacao tree, without additives. Brands like Spiruella, Novus Fumus, and Pure Kakaw offer suitable cacao.

  • Dosage: For beginners, I recommend starting with a lighter batch of 10-20 grams of cacao, or an average batch of 20-30 grams. Don't use more than 40 grams at home. Generally, a dose for ceremonies is between 25-50 grams per person.
  • Preparation:
    1. Heat water or plant-based milk (approximately 125 ml per 30-40 grams of cacao). Do not boil, as boiling liquid can damage the active ingredients in the cacao.
    2. Add the raw cacao (paste, nibs, or powder) to the cooled liquid and mix well with a whisk or blender until smooth.
    3. If the drink is too bitter, you can add a little honey or agave syrup, but try to limit this to preserve the pure flavor.
    4. Add spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, vanilla, or a pinch of cayenne pepper for extra flavor.

3. The Ceremony & Aftercare

Drinking Pure Cacao

  • Drink consciously: Take small sips and let the cacao do its work. Focus on your intentions.
  • Relax and reflect: Take some time to relax and feel how the cacao works in your body.
  • Activities: After drinking the cacao, you can meditate, write down your thoughts and feelings, take a leisurely walk, or focus on your breathing. Some people experience energetic vibrations, warmth, or chills, which are considered positive reactions.

Benefits and possible side effects

Cacao ceremonies offer several benefits. You can experience a sense of heightened awareness and connection, heal emotional wounds, reduce stress and anxiety, and create a sense of inner peace and tranquility. It can also stimulate your creativity and help you process and release emotional blocks. While cacao ceremonies are generally considered safe, especially under supervision, there are some possible, usually mild, side effects. These include mild stomach upsets such as nausea or abdominal pain, headaches, or intense emotional experiences. Drinking plenty of water helps you stay hydrated and prevent headaches. People with certain medical conditions, such as heart disease, severe digestive problems, or psychosis, and pregnant women, should exercise caution and always seek medical advice before participating. Conclusion: The Door to Your Inner Self Experiencing a cacao ceremony, whether guided or at home, is a deeply personal journey that can provide surprising insights. It is an opportunity to pause, silence the constant noise of daily life, and listen to your inner voice. Just as a landscape painter takes the time to study the nuances of light and shadow before putting their brush to canvas, a cacao ceremony invites you to explore the subtle layers of your own consciousness, leading to a richer and clearer self-portrait.

Will you also make this deeper connection with yourself? I'd love to hear about your experiences! Share them in the comments.
