Anyone currently 14 or younger will never be able to buy cigarettes in New Zealand again. This ban does not apply to e-cigarettes, which are considered "an alternative." The New Zealand government announced this measure on December 9.

New Zealand aims to be smoke-free by 2025

New Zealand has already set a goal of becoming smoke-free by 2025. In addition to banning cigarette sales, the nicotine content in tobacco products will also be minimized.

In New Zealand and Australia, you pay over €25 per pack of cigarettes. Advertising has been banned for over 50 years. Yet, smoking remains the leading cause of death, and one in four cancers is caused by cigarettes.

Measure is not valid for e-cigarettes

The new legislation does not apply to e-cigarettes. This product is seen as an alternative to help people quit smoking. Experts applaud the government's plan. The tobacco industry warns of bankruptcies and a black market.
