E-cigarettes could be a tool for smokers to quit tobacco. Their conclusion: vaping is less harmful than smoking, but there are still risks involved.
E-cigarettes are less harmful than traditional tobacco cigarettes. That's the conclusion of the Belgian Superior Health Council. E-cigarettes could be a helpful tool for smokers to quit. We already wrote about this in a previous blog post.
The Belgian Health Council is an independent scientific advisory board to the Belgian government. Its final conclusion is that vaping is less harmful than smoking, but there are still risks involved. However, the Council also emphasizes that reducing the use of both traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes must remain a priority.
Nevertheless, e-cigarettes can offer some smokers opportunities for health gain, but only if they completely abandon tobacco cigarettes. E-cigarettes can be a helpful tool after using proven, effective, and recognized smoking cessation aids (unless the smoker indicates a preference for e-cigarettes). According to the Council, in that case, it's a good idea to switch from tobacco cigarettes to e-cigarettes, but also to phase out vaping afterward. After all, a smoker who quits tobacco and switches to vaping is not a quitter.
