Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) is a small, spineless, button-shaped cactus that has been an integral part of the culture of indigenous communities in North and Central America—such as the Huichol and Navajo tribes—for thousands of years, dating back at least 5,000 years. This plant is renowned for its psychoactive compounds, particularly mescaline, and is used for spiritual, ritual, and ceremonial purposes. It is revered as a sacred medicine that fosters a deep connection with nature and the spiritual realm.

It is important to note that Peyote is a protected species currently on the IUCN Red List of threatened species. This is partly due to increasing recreational harvesting, alongside its traditional religious use.

Effects and Duration of a Peyote Trip

The primary psychoactive alkaloid in Peyote is mescaline, a phenethylamine that profoundly alters consciousness and perception. Users frequently experience vivid visual hallucinations and a distorted perception of time and space. This can lead to deep introspection, a profound sense of interconnectedness, and sometimes mystical or religious experiences. Many describe a mescaline experience as similar to LSD, but noticeably gentler, more colorful, and warmer.

The effects of Peyote typically begin within 30 minutes of ingestion. This initial onset phase is often accompanied by physical symptoms such as nausea, sweating, chills, abdominal cramps, and tearing eyes. These uncomfortable sensations generally subside once the trip fully unfolds. The peak of the experience is usually reached after one to two hours. The total duration of a Peyote trip generally lasts between 8 and 12 hours. However, higher doses can extend the experience to 16, or in some cases, up to 24 hours.

How to Dry Peyote

Drying Peyote is essential for long-term preservation and for preparing the plant into a consumable powder or tea. This process removes water weight, naturally increasing the concentration of mescaline per gram of remaining material.

  1. Harvesting the Peyote: The green crown above the soil line, commonly referred to as the "Peyote button," contains the highest concentration of mescaline. Slice this crown off horizontally, leaving the underground white taproot intact in the pot. The root contains virtually no mescaline and, if left undisturbed, can grow new buttons over time.
  2. Stressing the Cactus (Optional): Some traditional and modern methods suggest storing the cut Peyote buttons in a cool, dark place for anywhere from a few weeks to over a month (average room temperature is fine, though cooler is preferred over hot). This process "stresses" the plant, which may trigger an increase in alkaloid production as a defense mechanism. Avoid freezing fresh buttons directly; however, once sliced, freezing the flesh can help break down cell walls to facilitate easier extraction.
  3. Drying the Harvested Buttons:
    • Slice the Peyote buttons into uniform disks about 1 cm thick.
    • Place the slices in an oven or food dehydrator and dry them at a maximum temperature of 50°C (122°F) until they are completely bone-dry.
    • Alternatively, the slices can be dried naturally in the sun. Traditionally, native practitioners and *peyoteros* dried the buttons on large mesh screens for preservation.
    • It is crucial that the cactus is completely bone-dry, as any residual moisture will lead to mold and spoilage. The slices should snap easily when bent.

Methods of Consumption

Peyote can be consumed in several ways, each with its own advantages and challenges:

  • A. Chewing Raw: The most common traditional method involves chewing the cactus (either fresh or dried) thoroughly until the mescaline is absorbed through the oral mucosa before swallowing. However, the taste of Peyote is notoriously and intensely bitter. This bitterness frequently triggers acute nausea before the psychoactive effects even begin. To help manage the taste, you can drink unsweetened pineapple juice or fruit juice while chewing. For optimal results, it is highly recommended to fast for at least six hours prior to ingestion.
  • B. Powdering (From Dried Slices): The bone-dry slices or buttons can be ground into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle or a grinder. While this powder can be consumed directly with a liquid, doing so often causes stomach cramps. A common approach is taking 5 grams of powder at a time with a quick gulp of water or juice to bypass the taste. Alternatively, the powder can be packed into empty gelatin or veggie capsules to completely avoid the bitter flavor.
  • C. Brewing Tea (Most Common & Recommended Way): Brewing a tea is widely considered the most manageable method of consumption, as it significantly reduces the likelihood of severe side effects like intense nausea and stomach cramps.
    • Method 1 (Short Boil): Chop the Peyote into small pieces and let them simmer gently in water for about half an hour. Strain out the cactus material and drink the remaining liquid.
    • Method 2 (From Dried Peyote): Dissolve 20 grams of dried Peyote into a cup of water that has just been brought to a boil and removed from the heat source. This amount is generally noted for producing a standard, moderate experience.
    • Concentrating the Brew: You can simmer the strained liquid further to reduce it down to a smaller, more manageable volume without losing potency. Keep in mind that doing so makes the bitter taste far more concentrated. During the reduction process, a white-green foam may form on the surface; these are impurities that contribute heavily to nausea and should be gently skimmed off.

Peyote Dosage Guidelines

The mescaline content in Peyote can vary drastically based on the age of the cactus and its growing conditions. Because of this unpredictability, it is absolutely vital to always start with a low dose to gauge the potency of your specific plant.

General Baseline: 27 grams of dried Peyote contains roughly 300 mg of mescaline.

Here is a breakdown of typical dosages for dried Peyote:

  • Threshold Effect: around 13.5 grams of dried Peyote.
  • Mild Trip: 15 grams of dried Peyote. This delivers a dose of approximately 150 mg of mescaline.
  • Moderate Trip: 20 grams of dried Peyote. This sits comfortably in the 150–300 mg mescaline range.
  • Strong Trip: 30 grams of dried Peyote. This delivers roughly 300–400 mg of mescaline; the trip usually lasts between 6 and 12 hours.
  • Intense Trip (Potential Ego Dissolution): 40.5 – 45 grams of dried Peyote, delivering 450–500 mg of mescaline. The experience can last up to 12 hours.
  • Very Heavy Trip (Guaranteed Ego Dissolution): 45 – 54 grams of dried Peyote, corresponding to 500–600 mg of mescaline. This experience can last up to 24 hours.

When using fresh Peyote, roughly 150 grams is required for a mild trip. This is generally discouraged due to the massive volume of incredibly bitter plant material you would have to ingest.

Due to potency variations, practicing a split-dosing strategy is recommended: take half of your intended dose, wait 60 to 90 minutes to assess the initial effects, and then take the remainder if you feel comfortable doing so.

Crucial Safety Considerations

As with all powerful psychedelics, Peyote should always be taken in a safe, familiar environment and under the direct supervision of a sober, trusted trip sitter. This medicine is entirely unsuited for casual, recreational environments or social parties. Never attempt to operate vehicles or machinery during or immediately following a trip.

Avoid using Peyote if you have:

  • Pre-existing mental health conditions, including depression, severe anxiety, psychosis, or schizophrenia.
  • Heart conditions, high blood pressure, or if you are taking blood-pressure-lowering medications.
  • Other medical complications such as impaired kidney function, stomach ulcers, diabetes, glaucoma, or thyroid disorders.
  • Are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.

Absolutely do not combine mescaline cacti with other substances, including:

  • Alcohol and cannabis.
  • Stimulants such as cocaine or amphetamines.
  • Tramadol.
  • MAO Inhibitors (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors): such as Banisteriopsis caapi, Peganum harmala (Syrian Rue), Passionflower, Yohimbe, certain older antidepressants or blood pressure medications, MDMA (Ecstasy), certain anesthetics, anti-migraine medications, allergy medications, Ephedra/ephedrine, Pseudoephedrine, Macromerine, Phentermine, LSA, and high doses of caffeine. Combining mescaline with MAOIs can cause hypertensive crises and is potentially life-threatening.
  • Mixing mescaline with other psychedelics like LSA, magic truffles, or psilocybin mushrooms is highly discouraged.

Peyote is non-addictive, but the human body builds a rapid tolerance to mescaline. You will need to wait several days to a few weeks after a session for your baseline tolerance to reset before a similar effect can be achieved.
