One in four smokers has started smoking more due to the corona crisis.

Nearly a quarter of smokers have started smoking more due to the coronavirus crisis. While they mainly smoked out of boredom during the first wave, stress may now be playing a significant role. This is according to a recently published study by the Trimbos Institute.

According to researchers, more than half of smokers suffer from stress. Yet, a small group (16 percent) manages to cut down on their smoking. "Before the coronavirus crisis, I only smoked at parties, but now I smoke daily. I'm feeling more stressed now that I have to teach the children at home, the youngest can no longer go to daycare, and my husband also works from home," says one respondent.
