What is Mitragyna speciosa (Kratom)?
Kratom (botanical name: Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical evergreen tree from Southeast Asia belonging to the coffee family (Rubiaceae). Kratom leaves contain natural alkaloids, of which mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) are the primary active substances. After harvesting in regions such as Borneo and Bali, kratom is traditionally dried into raw powder, or extracted into concentrated kratom liquids, tinctures, and edibles.

Kratom Vein Colors
Within the ethnobotanical market, kratom products are categorized by vein color (red, white, green, yellow). These colors do not indicate different kratom strains, but arise from specific drying and fermentation techniques that determine the oxidation level of the kratom leaf:
- White Kratom: Dried indoors in the shade, preventing photodegradation (breakdown by light) and minimizing the oxidation of the kratom leaves.
- Green Kratom: Dried indoors with a very short exposure to direct sunlight. This preserves the chlorophyll in the kratom leaves.
- Red Kratom: Intensively dried in direct sunlight or fermented. This exposure causes oxidation and gives red kratom its dark hue.
- Yellow/Gold Kratom: Does not occur naturally, but is created through a prolonged fermentation process of green or white kratom leaves in the sun.
Risks of Kratom Use
The use of kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is not without risks. The alkaloids in kratom bind to opioid receptors in the brain, resulting in a significant risk of tolerance development and psychological or physical dependence (addiction). Frequent kratom use can lead to withdrawal symptoms. Furthermore, never combine kratom with alcohol, medications (such as benzodiazepines), or other substances; this is life-threatening and increases the risk of respiratory depression or serotonin syndrome.
Storing Kratom

Always store kratom in an airtight, dark container at room temperature. Avoid storing kratom in the refrigerator, as temperature fluctuations can cause condensation and mold growth in the product.
