What is a Magic Mushroom Grow Kit?
A Magic Mushroom grow kit is a complete, ready-to-use kit that allows you to grow mushrooms yourself. It contains a nutrient-rich substrate that has already been colonised by mycelium. This mycelium is the living fungal network from which the mushrooms develop.
With a Novus Fumus grow kit, the most difficult preparation has already been done for you. There is no need to sterilise the substrate yourself or inject it with spores. Activation and care can vary between products, so always follow the specific instructions supplied with your grow kit.
Magic Mushrooms vs. Magic Truffles: What is the Difference?
Magic Truffles and Magic Mushrooms can contain the same main active compounds: psilocybin and psilocin. The main biological difference is that Magic Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of the fungus, while Magic Truffles are actually sclerotia: compact nutrient-storage structures formed by the mycelium.
Potency can also vary. Both Magic Mushrooms and Magic Truffles are natural products, meaning the amount of active compounds can differ between species, growing conditions, batches and even individual specimens.

Growing Magic Mushrooms Yourself
Not every grow kit follows the same instructions, so there is no single method that applies to every product. Always consult the specific growing instructions supplied with your kit for the exact steps.
Basic Guidelines
Whichever grow kit you choose, there are several important points to keep in mind:
- Work cleanly: Contamination can cause a grow to fail. Wash your hands thoroughly and make sure your workspace is clean before handling the grow kit.
- Use the right temperature: Many standard Magic Mushroom grow kits perform well at temperatures of around 20 to 24°C. The ideal temperature can vary depending on the kit, so always follow the relevant instructions. Keep the grow kit out of direct sunlight and away from hot radiators.
- Maintain high humidity: Mycelium requires high humidity to produce fruiting bodies. With many grow kits, the bag remains closed until the first pinheads become visible, unless the product instructions state otherwise.
- Multiple flushes: Many grow kits can produce more than one flush. How the kit should be prepared after the first harvest varies from product to product.
Harvesting, Drying and Storing Magic Mushrooms
The ideal harvesting time and the way mushrooms should be handled afterwards depend on the species and grow kit. Always follow the instructions for your specific product.
When Should You Harvest?
With many grow kits, the veil underneath the cap is used as an indication of the right harvesting time. When the veil starts to separate, the mushroom is usually ready to harvest. Waiting longer may allow the cap to open further and release dark spores, which can discolour the substrate and surrounding mushrooms.
If you specifically want to collect spores, a spore print can be made from a fully opened cap. This is not necessary for normal grow kit use.
Using the veil as a harvesting indicator is a common guideline, but it does not automatically apply to every species. Always follow the instructions supplied with your grow kit.
Blue Bruising or Mould?
Blue discolouration can appear when Magic Mushrooms or mycelium are bruised or damaged. In psilocybin-producing mushrooms, this can be linked to natural oxidation reactions. Blue colouring therefore does not automatically mean that contamination is present.
Colour alone, however, is not enough to reliably assess the condition of a grow kit. Also watch for a strongly unusual smell, sliminess, an abnormal texture or unusual discolouration that spreads quickly.

How Should Magic Mushrooms Be Dried and Stored?
Drying removes a large proportion of the moisture naturally present in mushrooms. As a result, both their weight and shelf life change considerably.
Once completely dried, mushrooms should be stored somewhere dry, dark and airtight to prevent them from absorbing moisture again. Always keep them out of reach of children and pets.
Using Magic Mushrooms and Their Effects
Magic Mushrooms can produce an intense psychedelic experience. Initial effects are generally noticeable within around 20 to 60 minutes. The most pronounced effects often last several hours, roughly 3 to 6 hours, although after-effects may continue beyond this period.
The way a trip develops depends on factors including the amount of active compounds, the individual and the surrounding environment.
