What is Rapé?
Rapé (pronounced: Ha-Pay) is a fine snuff powder made from the powerful Nicotiana rustica tobacco, blended with sacred tree ashes and plant extracts. Users often experience Rapé as immediate and intense, providing a temporary boost to focus and alertness. Within ceremonial traditions, Rapé is used for grounding, finding stillness, and working with intentions. Many users find it helpful for meditation or ritual use.
How do you use Rapé?
Rapé is administered by blowing the powder into the nose using a specific blowpipe. If you are using Rapé by yourself, you use a Kuripe, a small V-shaped pipe. When someone else blows the Rapé for you, a Tepi (a larger blowpipe) is used. In a ceremonial setting, this process centers on cleansing and intention, where the forceful breath helps to immediately ground the individual and quiet the mind.
Warning: When should you avoid use?
Ideally, Rapé should not be used—or only used after consulting a physician—in the following situations:
- In combination with MAO inhibitors, antidepressants, or heavy medication.
- During pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
- If you have high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease.
- In combination with alcohol or other psychoactive substances.
